Broncos training camp: Standouts and takeaways from Day 7

With the Denver Broncos' offense struggling during practice, bettors might consider this a warning sign ahead of upcoming games, potentially affecting their confidence and performance in the preseason.

The Denver Broncos' second-team offense had a sloppy day of practice on Friday with numerous penalties and turnover-worthy plays. With officials on hand to help give players a game-like feel, those sloppy mistakes led to flags. "There were two or three times we were too deep at [offensive] tackle," Broncos coach Sean Payton said after practice. "In a game, you get one warning, but we gotta get that cleaned up. And then, we had one period that it appeared that we had at least three false starts. ... We gotta get that cleaned up." Better to happen now than in a game. The players fighting for spots on the roster will aim to learn from these camp mistakes and not let them carry over into preseason as they compete to win a role this summer. One mistake can be corrected. Repeating the same mistake can lead to being cut.

Now, here are five quick takeaways (and some standouts) from Friday's session.

1. New facility reaches a milestone: The Broncos had a topping out ceremony for their upcoming training facility on Friday morning. After being signed by employees of the team, the final timber beam was put in place.

2. Broncos injury report: Wide receiver A.T. Perry (ankle; PUP) and linebacker Drew Sanders (foot) remain sidelined. Linebacker Alex Singleton (thumb) is not ready to practice yet, but he was back on the field for stretching with a hand brace. Fellow linebacker Dre Greenlaw (tweak) also wasn't in pads, but he was moving around well during stretching. Rookie edge defender Que Robinson (bone bruise) was spotted wearing a brace on his right knee. Payton said after practice that Greenlaw and Robinson are on track to return to action next week, but the team will be cautious.

3. Denver adds linebacker: With Singleton, Greenlaw and Sanders all sidelined, the Broncos signed veteran linebacker Garret Wallow, who has 42 tackles and one sack in 35 career games in the NFL. To make room for Wallow on the roster, the team waived cornerback Mario Goodrich.

4. Bo Nix throws first INT of camp: The good news is that Nix didn't have a turnover until the seventh practice of training camp. The bad news is he threw two on the same day (although he was bailed out on one thanks to a defensive penalty). Overall, Nix has had a good camp and he looks like he's ready to take a step forward in Year 2. Going up against one of the best defenses in the NFL, though, it's not surprising to see occasional rough days.

5. Standouts and big-play defenders: As has been a trend for the first week, Denver's defense had another strong performance. Safety Talanoa Hufanga arguably made the play of the day on Nix's first interception. After practice, Payton said it was a "sick" takeaway from Hufanga, who closed down on a pass from about eight yards away. Defensive lineman Zach Allen and pass rusher Nik Bonitto also stood out.

Denver’s defense might be THAT good. Strong at all three levels. Pressure from all over. Zach Allen and Nik Bonitto are forces of nature. Talanoa Hufanga looked all the way back today.— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) August 1, 2025

Despite the defense's strong day, offensive players who got shoutouts included third-string QB Sam Ehlinger, depth wide receiver Michael Bandy, rookie receiver Pat Bryant and running back Blake Watson.

Denver will have a situational scrimmage practice on Saturday, followed by a day off on Sunday. Players will then return for Day 9 of practice on Monday (view the full training camp schedule).

Day 7 of training camp has wrapped up for the Broncos. Here are the standout players and takeaways.
