How the boxing world including Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury reacted to Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois low blow

With Oleksandr Usyk preparing for his rematch against Daniel Dubois on July 19, 2023, punters should consider the recent debate surrounding the legality of Dubois’ previous low blow, as it may affect Usyk's performance and confidence going into this fight. Betting on Usyk to win via knockout seems favorable given his knockout victory in their last matchup and Dubois’ history of vulnerabilities.

The boxing world is divided on whether or not Daniel Dubois’ shot was a low blow. In Oleksandr Usyk and Dubois’ first outing, the latter threw a shot that was ruled as a low blow by the referee.

Two days remain until the score is settled between the rivals. The ruling in the fifth round led to Usyk taking a medical timeout, which lasted for almost four minutes. When the bout resumed, he went on to beat the Briton via knockout in the ninth round.

Following his defeat almost two years ago, Dubois has been on a winning streak, securing three consecutive victories by way of knockout against Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic, and Anthony Joshua. Usyk is also in good form, having recently added two wins against Tyson Fury to his perfect 23-0 record.

The highly anticipated rematch between Usyk and Dubois is nearly upon us. On July 19, they will go head-to-head in a 12-round clash. As the pair prepare to settle the score, the debate continues on whether or not it was a low blow in their first outing.

And here, talkSPORT.com has gathered the opinions of some of the most prominent names in boxing on the matter.

Who thought the shot was legal?

Tyson Fury thinks it was a legal shot. Fury made his stance on the matter clear, telling Sky Sports: “I thought he lost [to Dubois] and he quit, so he’s a little, quitting [coward].“And once you quit once you’ll always quit, just like we saw with Dubois. He quit too, so that was two quitters fighting each other.”

“It’s tough to say somebody’s quit, but Usyk quit with a body shot and rattled around the floor like a little [coward] for five minutes, and the other one quit with a jab. But the truth is the truth, and that’s it.”

“I’ve been hit full-on, right [below the belt] with the hardest punches you’ve ever seen, I didn’t roll around like that.”

“It is what it is, you’re a fighting man or you’re not, and if you quit once, you will always quit again. My father told me that when I was a child. If you spew it once, you’ll always spew it, and that’s the facts of the matter. End of.”

Anthony Joshua has lost to both men and he thinks the shot was legal. Joshua explained his perspective on the shot: “Probably legal. It’s a fight, you get hit, you get hit round the belt, round the leg. He got hit, and he went down. Legal.”

Roy Jones Jr thinks it was a good shot and not a low blow. Jones Jr said, “I didn’t think it was low, I thought it was a good shot. Sometimes when it’s borderline, if the cup makes contact it’s gonna hurt you.”

Who thought it was a low blow?

Eddie Hearn says it was unquestionably a low blow. Hearn said, “If you punch underneath the waistband, and there is no doubt, and there are so many different angles and freeze frames.”

“He punches up. I don’t know, once the punch goes up it’s obviously higher than where it started. The bottom of the fist was, I don’t know, 10 inches below the waistband. It’s hit his protector. The whole fist lands below the waistband.”

“For me, I’m really sorry, but unquestionably a low blow.”

Teddy Atlas calls it a low blow regardless of where it landed. Atlas said on his podcast: “It didn’t seem to be on the groin area, it seemed to be on the side. But it was below the line and below where the cup begins.”

“It wasn’t dramatically below, but it was below. So it’s technically a low blow, that’s not too hard to define.”

Tony Bellew says it’s not low in his opinion, but as a fact. Bellew posted his verdict on X: “Anything below the naval is classed as low in boxing! That’s not my opinion, that’s a fact! That’s the rules!”

“Your shorts shouldn’t cover your naval, cos if they do, the belt can be hit!”
