So far, it looks like Alejandro Garnacho won’t be leaving Old Trafford any time soon either. United need more depth in attack, especially with the three players named being deemed surplus to requirements, and West Ham United’s Mohammed Kudus has been tipped to leave this summer. The Hammers have seen a few senior players leave this summer and Maguire could get the fresh start he needs at a club who tried to sign him in the recent past. A failed move for Maguire by West Ham in 2023 when the towering stopper was on the bench frustrated the centre-half, but as always, he got his head down and worked harder. Given that Kudus is only 24, United would have to contribute some sort of transfer fee but it wouldn’t break the bank and a player who is on big wages and who is coming to the end of their contract could be moved on.

Amorim is the latest boss to do a 180 on Maguire when he became a key figure for United in the centre of a back three. His organisational skills and physicality continue to be useful in domestic football with his composure on the ball still a valued attribute on the continent. Speaking in January: "I feel he is a leader again," said Amorim to BBC Sport. "He feels more like an important player in the team. "He believes in himself a lot and he's doing a great job. "We have to praise Harry more than me. He was sick before the last game and was dead in the end. That is what I want from every player. "He's really good with the ball in that position," he said. "You can also see in this league it is really important to be good in set-pieces and when we are defending low, there are a lot of crosses. Arsenal did a lot of crosses with Harry and we controlled that area."

Given the way that he has been treated by various managers, it is only a surprise that Maguire hasn’t moved on quicker than he has. He values the opportunity to play at Old Trafford and the stature of the club he is at, if only more players had a similar mentality.
